JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has completed the handling of the Belawan area in Medan City, North Sumatra Province.

The Director General of Water Resources at the Ministry of PUPR, Bob Arthur Lombgia, said that the handling of the Belawan area was carried out in stages until 2029.

The construction of the Belawan tidal flood control infrastructure was carried out by the Sumatra II River Basin Center of the Directorate General of Water Resources of the Ministry of PUPR with a total construction cost of IDR 25.6 billion.

The scope of work includes the construction of embankment parapets, pumps and pump houses, collector drainage, box culverts, and floodgates. Construction has been carried out since August 2022 and is currently complete.

Meanwhile, the arrangement of the Belawan Bahari slum area begins in mid-2023 with the main aim of improving environmental conditions through infrastructure development such as the drainage system, 300-meter paving block, and public street lighting.

The construction of reservoirs with a capacity of 300 cubic meters is also expected to reduce the impact of tidal flooding.

The Director General of Human Settlements at the Ministry of PUPR, Diana Kusumastuti, said that this project is not only focused on physical development, but also on approaches through various programs aimed at empowering the community.
