The Ministry of PUPR has completed the handling of the Belawan area in Medan City, North Sumatra Province (Doc/PUPR).

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has completed the handling of the Belawan area in Medan City, North Sumatra Province.

The Belawan area is considered necessary to be arranged because of the inappropriate environmental conditions of its settlements and the location is flanked by the mouths of the Belawan and Deli rivers so that it is prone to tidal flooding.

The Director General of Water Resources at the Ministry of PUPR, Bob Arthur Lombgia, said that the handling of the Belawan area was carried out in stages until 2029.

"In phase 1 of 2022-2024, Belawan tidal flood management has been carried out, construction of K3 floodgates and pump houses, socialization of tidal flood management, handling of Belawan Behari extreme poverty, and handling urban forests and RLTH," said Bob. written statement, Saturday, September 28, 2024.

The construction of the Belawan tidal flood control infrastructure was carried out by the Sumatra II River Basin Center of the Directorate General of Water Resources of the Ministry of PUPR with a total construction cost of IDR 25.6 billion.

The scope of work includes the construction of embankment parapets, pumps and pump houses, collector drainage, box culverts, and floodgates. Construction has been carried out since August 2022 and is currently complete.

Meanwhile, the arrangement of the Belawan Bahari slum area begins in mid-2023 with the main aim of improving environmental conditions through infrastructure development such as the drainage system, 300-meter paving block, and public street lighting.

The construction of reservoirs with a capacity of 300 cubic meters is also expected to reduce the impact of tidal flooding.

The Director General of Human Settlements at the Ministry of PUPR, Diana Kusumastuti, said that this project is not only focused on physical development, but also on approaches through various programs aimed at empowering the community.

"Concepts such as Kampung Friendly Air, Kampung Sejahtera, Kampung Hijau, and Kampung Tangguh are developed to create a sustainable, healthy, and economically and socially independent environment," he said.

The arrangement of this area is also supported by the involvement of the private sector through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program.

For example, PT Jasa Marga which donated red shoots for reforestation along Jalan Sinabang and PT Tasblock Industry Indonesia which provided park chairs and trash bins for public open spaces.
