JAKARTA - AQUA today announced a strategic collaboration with Prevented Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia (POPSEA) through the inauguration of the Recycling Center in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

The Recycling facility is a plastic waste collection and sorting facility designed to support the recycling process more efficiently. The presence of this Recycling Facility is expected to be able to collect 9,600 plastic tons of PET every year.

The first modern Recycling facility in Kalimantan was inaugurated by Rofi Alhanif, Assistant Deputy for Waste and Waste Management, Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia; Murboyudo Joyosuyono, Functional for Young Experts Industry Development Directorate of Chemical Downstream and Pharmaceutical Industries, Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia together with Karyanto Wibowo, Sustainable Development Director of Danone Indonesia and Daniel Lawrence Angelo Law, President Director of Prevented Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia, Ltd witnessed by Anwar Sanusi S.Pd., M.Pd, Head of the Environment Service of East Kalimantan Province and Dr. Ishak Yassir, S.Hut., M.Si, Head of the Kalimantan Tailegion Control Development Center.

Based on data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) in 2022, the amount of waste accumulation in East Kalimantan has reached more than 791 thousand tons. The largest waste comes from households which account for 55.97 percent of the total accumulation.

Seeing the type of waste, the majority of waste in East Kalimantan is food residue as much as 51.11 percent, followed by plastic 19.5 percent, and paper/cardon waste 12.37 percent. This increase in the amount of waste is inseparable from the increasing population and rapid development, one of which is the development of the State Capital (IKN) in East Kalimantan.

With the presence of the Samarinda Recycling Facility, plastic waste from various sources in the Kalimantan area including coastal areas is collected, sorted and processed for further delivery to larger recycling facilities. The goal is to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills (TPA) and prevent plastic waste from polluting the environment, especially the sea.

Rofi Alhanif, Assistant Deputy for Waste and Waste Management, Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia welcomed the AQUA and Prevented Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia initiatives in presenting Recycle Facilities in the Kalimantan region.

"This initiative is expected to strengthen the circular economic ecosystem outside Java, especially in East Kalimantan. Furthermore, we believe that multi-sector collaboration is one of the keys in helping the government tackle plastic waste leakage into the sea, therefore we appreciate the initiatives carried out by AQUA and Prevented Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia. We hope that this initiative can be continued in other areas and replicated by many parties," he explained, in a written statement, Thursday, September 26.

As one of the government's strategic partners in tackling the problem of plastic waste, AQUA has ambitions to collect more plastic packaging waste than used during the production process. In realizing its ambitions, AQUA collaborates with various partners to carry out the #BijakBerplastic initiative which focuses on three main pillars, namely collection, education, and innovation.

Sustainable Development Director of Danone Indonesia, Karyanto Wibowo, explained that the inauguration of the Samarinda Recycling Facility as a result of AQUA collaboration with the Prevented Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia is a form of real steps by AQUA in realizing a sustainable commitment and creating a positive impact on the environment through the #BijakBerlastic movement.

"This collaboration is expected to support the efforts of the Indonesian government in overcoming waste problems through the development of circular economic infrastructure outside Java. Thus, the company can increase its contribution to the roadmap for reducing waste. In addition to the company's commitment to implementing the Added Product Responsibility Regulation (Extended Producer Responsibility or EPR), this collaboration is also in line with the company's sustainability strategy as stated in Danone Impact Journey," explained Karyanto.

In 2022, the amount of waste entering the TPA in East Kalimantan every day is 6.5 cubic meters, and only 67 percent of them have been successfully handled. Since June 2022, Prevented Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia has managed to collect more than 16,000 metric tons of plastic waste from the environment.

Through local-based services, Prevented Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia provides premium-certified and traceable recycled plastics to the global market. This initiative not only helps the environment but also provides social and economic added value for the entire supply chain, from bottle collectors to final consumers.

The Samarinda Recycling Facility is the ninth center for collecting and sorting plastic waste that has been opened by Prevented Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia in Indonesia, which plays an important role in supporting the circular economy ecosystem in East Kalimantan, including in the Nusantara Capital area.

Since early 2022, the Prevention Ocean PlasticTM Southeast Asia has prevented more than 1 billion plastic bottles from entering the ocean. This is a major step in protecting marine ecosystems and reducing environmental pollution.
