Full Operation of Tangguh Refinery Boosts National Gas Production

JAKARTA - The Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) noted that national gas production managed to achieve a new production record of 7,399 million cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) which was achieved on September 4, 2024, as well as exceeding the previous record on August 17, 2024, which amounted to 7,212 MMSCFD.

This success cannot be separated from the full operation of Tangguh LNG to 3 trains with an average LNG production of 2.1 billion cubic feet per day from its three disbursement refineries.

Just so you know, since April 2024, Tangguh LNG has been fully operating with 3 trains. Starting at that time, production every month continued to increase and managed to record its highest production record which was achieved on August 31 and has now succeeded in producing 1,300 m3 LNG per hour and even reached 106 percent of its capacity.

Head of the SKK Migas Program and Communication Division, Hudi D Suryodipuro, said that this achievement was inseparable from the success of the BP Cooperation Contract Contract Contractor (KKKS) which was able to optimally operate Tangguh LNG which ultimately had a positive impact in the form of increasing national gas production. Moreover, currently BP is the largest gas producer in Indonesia.

"After the inauguration of Tangguh Train 3 by the President in November 2023, the production is still not stable, but with a strong determination by continuing to place work safety as a priority and optimal supervision of SKK Migas, we see slowly that BP is able to carry out operations optimally, of course, the impact will continue to increase and national gas production can reach the highest record," said Hudi, Tuesday, September 10.

Hudi added that Tangguh LNG is the key to achieving the gas production target, because Tangguh is the number one contributor to gas production and accounts for about a third of gas production nationally. He explained that the LNG Tangguh contribution reached more than 2.5 times the contribution of other KKKS under it (second place).

"Maintaining the LNG from being a problem is the key, because once there are obstacles so that production must be stopped, the impact on national gas production is very significant. SKK Migas and BP will continue to maintain Tangguh LNG operations properly as a form of our contribution in maintaining energy supply while at the same time supporting national energy security," explained Hudi.

Hudi hopes that all ranks in Tangguh LNG can maintain their operations properly and production can continue to be improved because Tangguh field is one of the main contributors in the Government's efforts to achieve the gas production target which reaches 12 billion cubic feet per day (BSCFD) by 2030.

He believes that the 12 BSCFD gas production target in 2030 can be realized considering that oil and gas findings are currently dominated by gas discovery and acceleration efforts that continue to be carried out by SKK Migas and KKKS so that any gas discovery can be produced immediately.

"Currently and in the future the upstream oil and gas project is dominated by gas projects. In 2024 alone, of the onstream target of 15 projects, 10 of them are gas projects. Therefore, we believe that the gas production target of 12 BSCFDs by 2030 can be realized," said Hudi.

Currently, the gas production trend continues to increase and the Government has approved the North Hub Development Project Makassar Strait which is expected to start producing in 2028 with a production peak of 1,000 MMSCFD. Then the Abadi Masela block with LNG production equivalent to 1,600 MMSCFD plus 150 MMSCFD pipe gas. Furthermore, the Government's efforts to continue to encourage the development of domestic gas infrastructure, such as the Cisem 2 gas project that connects Batang to Cirebon, as well as the Dumai gas project to Sei Mangke.
