The high energy consumption has encouraged countries in the African region to explore the potential for cooperation in the oil and gas (oil and gas) sector with Indonesia.

One of the collaborations between Tanzania's national oil company, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), and PT Pertamina International EP (PIEP) which is part of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) as Pertamina's Upstream Subholding.

The cooperation agreement between TPDC and Pertamina was stated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Pertamina and TPDC which was signed on August 22, 2023 by the President Director of Pertamina and Managing Director (MD) TPDC.

Pertamina through PIEP and TPDC have carried out the capacity building batch 1 scope as well as upstream block evaluation activities agreed by Pertamina and TPDC. However, there is still potential collaboration for streaming upstream and downstream as well as continued activities for capacity building batch 2.

Following up on this, Pertamina through the Business Development Function and TPDC has conducted further discussions on the MOU amendment plan on the MOU extension article. Pertamina's MoU extension of the TPDC is intended to increase the duration of the MoU for the next 1 (one) year.

The cooperation agreement between TPDC and Pertamina was stated in the Amendment to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was signed on August 30, 2024 by the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Nicke Widyawati and continued with the exchange of documents at the Indonesia-Africa Forum meeting in Bali, Indonesia, Tuesday, September 3.

Pertamina's Upstream Subholding Corporate Secretary, Arya Dwi Paramita, said the MoU between TPDC and Pertamina includes a knowledge exchange program, capacity building, and collaborative research efforts that can further improve the capabilities of both parties in adopting and implementing sustainable energy practices.

In addition, both parties are also exploring investment partnerships.

"This cooperation in the energy sector is expected to strengthen Indonesia and Africa's resilience in creating a more connected and resilient energy network," he said in a statement to the media, Wednesday, September 4.

Previously, Pertamina and TPDC had completed an assessment of 2 oil and gas blocks in Tanzania, namely West Songo-Songo and North Mnazi Bay. The two companies continue to explore business potential in the non-hulu sector in Tanzania that can support Pertamina's overall and cross-subholding performance.
