Coal Is Still Supporting The Provision Of National Energy

JAKARTA - Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana revealed, in the midst of energy transformation towards net zero emissions, coal commodities were not immediately abandoned.

"The government is formulating a smart strategy to use coal more sustainably," Dadan said at the Economic Update quoted Friday, August 9.

Dadan said, one of his strategies is to reduce the use of direct coal as fuel for power plants. The coal power plant will switch to using CCS/CCUS technology to capture and store carbon.

In addition, coal will also be processed into derivative products such as Dimethyl Ether (DME) which is more environmentally friendly for household purposes.

On the other hand, continued Dadan, coal still supports our national energy supply. Coal production in 2023 is 775 million tons or 112 percent of the 2023 target of 695 million tons.

Domestic utilization of 213 million tons or 121 percent of the recorded target of 177 million tons.

With coal production reaching 775 million tons in 2023, PNBP sub-sector mineral and coal managed to achieve a realization of IDR 172.66 trillion or 118.41 percent of the target set at IDR 146.07 trillion.
