JAKARTA - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif said Indonesia is preparing to welcome a surge in natural gas production in the coming years.

Based on the latest data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, a number of new gas field development projects are projected to contribute significantly to the increase in national production.

"These are our efforts to achieve the production of 1 million barrels and 12 Billion Cubic Feet (BCF). So if there is a decline in oil, but in gas there is an increase. And this is not yet included in ENI's new field," said Arifin to the media crew quoted Monday, August 5th.

Arifin revealed, in the period 2027 to 2028, it is estimated that there will be a significant increase in natural gas production, mainly from the North Gang, IDD Gandang Gendalo, and Andaman separate fields.

The following are additional details of the gas production, including:

1. North Gang: Projected to produce an additional production of 1,000 Million Standard Cubic Feets per Day (MMSCFD) with reserves reaching 4.1 TCF. This field is expected to start production in 2027.

2. IDD Gandang Gendalo: With a production target of 4,900 MMSCFD and 6.3 TCF reserves, this field also has great potential to increase national gas production.

3. Andaman: Although still in the exploration stage, the Andaman field is estimated to have a production potential of 527 MMSCFD with a reserve of around 10 TCF.

In addition to the three major projects mentioned above, many fields such as Ubadari amounting to 550 MMSCFD, Smoke Kido Merah with a target of 330 MMSCFD, Maha of 194 MMSCFD, Secanggang of 140 MMSCFD, Mako with a target of 120 MMSCFD, Loffin 120 MMSCFD, Marakes East of 89 MMSCFD, Wasambo of 40 MMSCFD and Karendan of 100 MMSCFD are also expected to contribute to the said national natural gas production.

Although the prospects are bright, said Arifin, the development of new gas fields is also faced with a number of challenges, such as licensing issues, infrastructure availability, and fluctuations in global energy prices.

Therefore, the government and oil and gas companies need to work together, such as drilling the exploration of Targeting Giant Prospect on an average of 54 wells each year and Non Conventional Oil and Gas cooperation with world big players such as EOG Resources, CNPC, etc.

According to Arifin, this increase in natural gas production is also expected to strengthen national energy security, reduce dependence on imports, and encourage gas-based industrial growth.

In addition, natural gas is also considered as a cleaner source of transitional energy compared to other fossil fuels.

"Well, from this point on, we will use the gas to support energy security and at the same time support our energy transition, to be able to reduce carbon emissions," concluded Arifin.
