Considered To Have An Important Role In Energy Transition Policy, This Is The Advantage Of Geothermal Compared To EBT

JAKARTA - Executive Director of the ReferMiner Institute as well as an energy observer, Komaidi Notonegoro, said that the geothermal industry has the potential to play an important role in the transition process and national energy security.

It is known, if all of Indonesia's geothermal potential can be utilized, there is a potential for greenhouse gas reduction (GHG) of around 182.32 million tons of CO2e or equivalent to 58 percent of the energy sector GHG reduction target by 2030 which is set at 314 million Tons of CO2e.

"Regarding energy resistance, geothermal has several advantages when compared to other types of new and renewable energy," said Komaidi, Thursday, June 13.

Komaidi detailed that this advantage includes not depending on the weather, larger energy production for the same period. Then it has a higher capacity level, priorities for domestic interests, is not affected by rising fossil energy prices and relatively cheaper cost of generating operation.

Komaidi said, in the EBT group, the capacity factor for geothermal power plants (PLTP) was recorded as the best, which was between 90 and 95 percent.

"PLTP is listed as the only EBT generator that can operate as a baseload in the electricity system," continued Komaidi.

He further explained that if the large PLTP capacity factor was reflected in the fact that PLN's PLTP installed capacity was only around 0.79 percent of the total installed capacity, PLTP's electricity production, which was managed by PLN in the same year, reached around 1.33 percent of PLN's total electricity production.

Komaidi said that utilizing geothermal for domestic energy sources could help realize national economic resilience.

The source of geothermal energy is free from the risk of rising primary energy prices, as happens in fossil energy in general.

"Because it is relatively free from the risk of rising prices, utilizing geothermal energy can help maintain national economic stability and growth," concluded Komaidi.
