Antam Boss Calls The Issue Of 109 Tons Of Fake Gold Makes People Panic And Start Selling

JAKARTA - President Director of PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) Nicolas D. Kanter revealed the impact of the issue of 109 tons of fake precious metal circulating. He said that currently many people are asking to withdraw or sell their gold.

"It's time now to be very critical. Because many people are now asking to withdraw gold or he sells his gold," he said in a meeting with Commission VI of the DPR, at the DPR RI Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday, June 3.

Therefore, Nico emphasized that clarification regarding the issue of fake gold is an important thing to answer public concerns. He said the Attorney General's Office (AGO) also stated that there was no fake gold processed by ANTAM.

Nico also highlighted the difference between what Kenagung actually said and the news in the mass media. He said the AGO had never issued a statement about fake gold, but news emerged about 109 tons of fake gold.

"Because there are so many questions related to gold, we have clarified it and it has been agreed by the prosecutor that there is no fake gold. This is very important," he said.

Nico said that the case currently being handled by the AGO is not related to counterfeiting gold. However, related to the process of melting the cap or brand licensing which is free of charge. The AGO also considers that it is detrimental to the state.

"In the process of melting this stamp, there is a branding, or license seen by the Prosecutor's Office, it is detrimental. So this is processed at ANTAM, but we do not charge license or branding fees. So there is a gold stamp that we give because with the stamp it increases the value too," he said.

Regarding the melting of the stamp or licensing, Nico admitted that he would conduct a study to ensure that this issue caused state losses or not. Including the exact value if it does cause losses.

"This study is what we are doing again. It's not just ANTAM, but we ask from a third party (to participate). If ANTAM is said to be just defending itself, but if we have to make it, we will make it, for example from Lemhanas, or from ITB," he explained.
