GEM: Renewable Energy Saves Costs To Secure Gas Price Unstability

JAKARTA - The Global Energy Monitor (GEM) report reveals that Southeast Asia is able to meet energy growth through renewable energy at competitive prices and low carbon emissions. The average cost of power generation (levelized cost of electricity/LCOE) of solar energy in Southeast Asia currently ranges from 70-95 US dollars/megawatt hour (MWh) and wind energy of 105-135 US dollars/MWh, compared to gas 80-125 US dollars/MWh. Energy demand continues to increase throughout Southeast Asia as the economy grows, but increases gas production instead of long-term solutions. Meeting the need for renewable energy that is more cost-efficient, will secure Southeast Asia region from unstable gas prices, and is a greener path going forward," said Project Manager for Asia Gas Tracker Global Energy Monitor (GEM) Warda Ajaz as quoted from a written statement in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Thursday 30 May.

His party proposes that countries in Southeast Asia Region can develop massive green energy such as solar and wind energy, because the two energy sources are projected to be able to become more affordable energy in the future.

Berdasarkan laporan tersebut, pengembangan energi surya dan angin di Asia Tenggara, jika berhasil dibangun maka diproyeksikan mampu menghasilkan listrik sebesar 450 terawatt hour (TWh) per tahun.Jumlah itu setara 2/3 proyeksi permintaan listrik di wilayah ini pada 2030. Selain itu, GEM menegaskan pengembangan energi terbarukan domestik yang dilengkapi baterai penyimpanan energi bisa menjadi alternatif bagi negara Asia Tenggara untuk terbebas dari tekanan pergerakan harga gas di pasar global.
