BPS: Transportation Gives The Largest Andil Inflation April 2024

JAKARTA - Plt. Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti stated that the inflation rate for transportation expenditure groups of 0.93 percent month-to-month (mom) contributed the largest to the monthly inflation rate in April 2024, which was 0.12 percent.

"The main contributors to inflation from transportation groups are air transportation rates with an inflationary contribution of 0.06 percent, intercity transportation rates with an inflationary contribution of 0.03 percent, and rail fares with an inflationary contribution of 0.01 percent," said Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Thursday, May 2.

He said that monthly inflation in April 2024 was recorded at 0.25 percent mtm based on the increase in the Consumer Price Index (JCI) from 106.13 in March 2024 to 106.40 in April 2024.

Other commodities that also contributed to monthly inflation in April 2024 were broiler meat, beef, onions, garlic, tomatoes, fresh fish, sweet corn, oranges, onions, sugar, cooking oil, machine kretek cigarettes (SKM), and gold jewelry.

Meanwhile, rice, broiler eggs, red chilies, and cayenne pepper commodities contribute monthly deflation. Overall, the food, beverage, and tobacco expenditure group experienced a deflation of 0.03 percent mtm.

Meanwhile, based on components, Amalia stated that monthly inflation in April 2024 was driven by inflation of core and component components regulated by the government.

"The core component experienced inflation of 0.29 percent mtm and contributed 0.18 percent of inflation," he said.

He mentioned that the main commodities that contribute inflation to the core component group are gold jewelry, cooking oil, and sugar.

Meanwhile, the price component is regulated by the government to experience inflation of 0.62 percent mtm with an inflationary contribution of 0.12 percent due to inflation at air transportation rates, inter-city transportation rates, train fares, and SKM.

Amalia said that different conditions were shown by the volatile price component which experienced deflation of 0.31 percent mtm with a deflation of 0.05 percent.

"The dominant commodities that contribute to deflation in volatile price components are red chilies, rice, broiler eggs, and cayenne pepper," he said.

BPS also noted that annual inflation in April 2024 reached 3 percent (year-on-year/yoy) and calendar year inflation was recorded at 1.19 percent (year-to-date/ytd).
