Galang International Support, KKP Targets To Expand The Capai Conservation Area By 30 Percent In 2045

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) targets the expansion of marine conservation areas by 2045 to reach 30 percent or so-called Marine Protected Area (MPA) Vision 30x45.

Director of Conservation and Diversity of the Sea of KKP Firdaus Agung said that one of the important factors to achieve this target is to prepare a comprehensive analysis of the costs and benefits of marine conservation.

The KKP itself has described the MPA Vision 30x45 spatial and strategic design in the Advanced Sustainable Ocean Governance dialogue: Integrating Blue Ocean Initiative for Conservation and Prosperity in Indonesia in Greece last week.

"KKP is garnering international support to realize the expansion of the sea conservation area of 97.5 million hectares (ha) or the equivalent of 30 percent of the sea area of Indonesian waters by 2045," Firdaus said as quoted from the official KKP website, Thursday, April 25.

Firdaus assessed that the expansion of conservation areas is important to ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems and maintain the survival of coastal communities.

"The achievement of an area of 30 percent of conservation areas in 2045 will potentially protect marine ecosystems covering an area of 58,000 ha sea fields, 211,000 ha mangroves, 1.2 million ha coral reefs, 30 percent spanning area and storing carbon 188 million tCO2eq and protecting marine resources of 22 billion US dollars per year," he said.

He added that the KKP also collaborated with the Indonesian Conservation (KI) in the design of the expansion of the region or the target of the MPA Vision 30x45. Cooperation is primarily in the implementation of consulting stakeholders, formulating guidelines for developing conservative areas as well as implementing study analysis of costs and benefits.

For your information, in line with the KKP policy emphasized by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (Minister of KP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono in various global forums, conservation in marine areas is one of Indonesia's mainstay strategies in restoring marine and water ecosystems.

Through this strategy, it is hoped that it can encourage the growth of new economic centers based on the management of water conservation areas to be used sustainably.
