JAKARTA - The construction of the Paralympic Training Center in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java Province, has begun. This is in line with the inauguration of the groundbreaking by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Friday, March 8, 2024.

Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono said the construction of the Karanganyar Paralympic Training Center was a momentum to have a training center for the first disabled athletes in Indonesia.

"With good sports infrastructure accompanied by the spirit of training, it will produce the expected results. Hopefully, this infrastructure support can improve Indonesia's Paralympic sports achievements," Basuki said in a written statement, quoted on Saturday, March 9.

Meanwhile, Director of Strategic Infrastructure of the Directorate General of Human Settlements, Ministry of PUPR Essy Asiah, said that the construction of Paralympic Training Center facilities and infrastructure had been contracted by contractor PT Nindya Karya at a state budget fee of Rp409.2 billion. Currently, construction has begun with a progress of 5.65 percent.

"The Paralympic Training Center was built under a multi-year contract (MYC) scheme for 2023-2024 with a target of completion in December 2024, but we will speed up the completion. God willing, October 2024 will be completed," he said.

One of the weightlifters from Semarang, Siti Maheasy, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of PUPR, Kemenpora, and NPC for realizing the construction of training centers for athletes with disabilities.

"It is hoped that it can become a comfortable and complete training ground for Indonesian athletes to develop their abilities," he said.

The Paralympic Training Center was built on an area of 8 hectares (ha) or about 80,262 square meters at the foot of Mount Lawu, precisely not far from the Cakra Palawasri Campground area in Delingan Village, Karanganyar.

Later, the Karanganyar Paralympic Training Center will build a number of facilities and infrastructure with a building area of 34,346 square meters.
