Presidential Decree Ready To Be Released, Regulate Application Of Technology To Carbon Imports

JAKARTA - Deputy for Maritime Sovereignty and Energy Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Marves) Jodi Mahardi said that the presidential regulation (perpres) regarding the development of carbon capture storage (CCS) will regulate the application of CCS technology to regulate carbon imports.

The current Presidential Decree has been signed and is ready to be released in the near future.

"The Presidential Decree has been signed. This shows that the government and all ministries fully support CCS," Jodi said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 23.

In detail, he continued, the regulation will regulate the implementation and development of CCS outside the oil and gas working area (oil and gas).

This was done because the largest potential for CCS development in Indonesia was in the delayed reservoir and saline aquifer, which is outside the oil and gas working area.

"So this allows operators to carry out (development) there," he said.

The Presidential Decree, also called Jodi, will open up the possibility of industries outside of oil and gas to develop CCS.

"So, investors such as steel, glass, smelters, can also do CCS," he added.

In addition, the regulation also opens up opportunities for cross-border CCS or carbon imports.

Jodi ensured that later the allocation for domestic CCS would be greater to accommodate domestic availability.

However, according to him, the potential for cross-border is needed to be able to achieve Indonesia's target to become a regional hub CCS. "But why do we open it for cross-borders is to achieve our aspirations to become a regional hub to become CCS," he said.

Jodi said the development of CCS requires large investments.

The CCS cross-border opportunity is expected to help invest so as to reduce development costs and encourage domestic industries to take advantage of this technology.

"Of course, by opening a cross border, this will help incoming investments to reduce costs and in the end, of course, our industry can also use CCS with lower or affordable costs," said Jodi.
