PT PLN (Persero) added a New Renewable Energy Plant (EBT) in early 2024 by operating two mini-hydro Power Plants (PLTM) after Kemu with a capacity of 2 x 3.5 Megawatts (MW) in Banjit District, Way Kanan, Lampung.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo explained that Indonesia has abundant water energy sources. This energy source is one of the pioneers in the transition from fossil energy to domestic energy sources.

With a production capacity of 2 x 3.5 MW, it is estimated that the two PLTMs are capable of producing green energy of 39 Gigawatt Hours (GWh) per year.

"As the backbone of the success of the energy transition to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in 2060, PLN actively accelerates various initiatives both collectively and collaboratively with stakeholders at home and abroad," Darmawan said in an official statement, Wednesday, January 10.

Darmawan explained that currently PLN has planned to increase electrical energy to be supported by EBT by 75 percent and 25 percent from the gas sector until 2040.

"For this reason, PLN has prepared an Accelerated Renewable Energy Development (ARED) scenario to increase the capacity of EBT generators massively and overcome the challenges of intermittency and mismatch in the location of EBT sources with demand centers in urban areas," continued Darmawan.

General Manager of PLN Lampung Distribution Main Unit, Saleh Siswanto added, PLTM Besai Kemu is one of the Independent Power Producer (IPP) generators and is the third PLTM operating in Lampung after PLTM Batu Brak and PLTM Sukarame.

"We are grateful that today the PLTM Besai Kemu has successfully operated, which is an EBT generator in Lampung. This generator can contribute to increasing the ratio of the EBT mix or green energy, especially in Lampung Province," said Saleh Siswanto.

Meanwhile, the President Director of PT Uway Energi Perdana, Asep Iwan Gunawan, said he was grateful for the operation of PLTM after Kemu 100 percent. According to him, this success is also supported by all parties in Lampung.

"PLTM After Kemu is expected to be useful for the people of Lampung, especially for the surrounding community. First, as an effort to provide clean energy, the electricity produced by PLTM Besai Kemu is a strengthening of supply for electricity subsystems in Lampung. Second, the presence of PLTM Besai Kemu also absorbs new workers from the surrounding community in Banjit District," concluded Asep.
