President Jokowi Explains 3 Ways To Maintain Peace And Stability

JAKARTA - At the 50th Anniversary Summit, the ASEAN-Japan Partnership which was opened by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo on Sunday 17 December 2023, also discussed 3 special agendas that became pillars of the ASEAN-Japan Joint Vision, one of which was cooperation for peace and stability.

During the half century of partnerships, ASEAN and Japan have been strategic partners who work hand in hand to face various threats such as pandemics, economic crises, and cross-border security.

"No wonder, a survey of ASEAN people declared Japan the most trusted major power in 2023," said Joko Widodo in his official statement, Monday, December 18.

Jokowi also appreciated Japan's support for ASEAN's efforts in making the region the center of world growth.

This is supported by ASEAN's strong modality both in terms of stable economic growth and the third largest population in the world.

"ASEAN and Japan's partnerships must be part of solutions, bidders of tensions and conflicts," said Jokowi.

Furthermore, Jokowi revealed that there are 3 ways that can be done, namely first with inclusive collaboration in the region. The mainstreaming of ASEAN Outlook on Indo Pacific is expected to be carried out from the point of view of cooperation with the form of inclusive collaboration with support from partner countries, including Japan, RRT, and South Korea.

Second, respect for international law and regulations. Joko Widodo invites to prevent open conflict in the region by complying with international laws and regulations. Meanwhile, the tragedy of humanity in Palestine as well as the prolonged conflict in Ukraine shows that one example of not being obeyed by international law.

Third, strengthen ASEAN's centrality. With Japan's support as ASEAN partners, it continues to be needed to maintain ASEAN's centrality, including in resolving Myanmar's issues.

"Through joint efforts, ASEAN and Japan can achieve a joint goal towards common security, common stability, and common property," concluded Joko Widodo.
