JAKARTA - Special Staff to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources for the Acceleration of Minerba Governance, Irwandy Arif, revealed that the demand for coal from Asian countries is still quite high.

This is in line with the high realization of coal production in 2023.

Quoted from the Minerba One Map Indonesia (MODI) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources as of December 11, 2023, Indonesia's coal production has reached 716.93 million tons or 103.23 percent of the national target set at 694 million tons.

"Indeed, demand from Asian countries is still high, yes," said Irwandi in the Mining Zone quoted on Wednesday, December 13.

Irwandy added that the comparison between coal exports and domestic needs was 70 percent compared to 30 percent.

He detailed, in 2020, coal exports amounted to 130 million tons, then 2021 it became 322 million tons and then in 2022 it was 361 million tons.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's Dmoestic Market Obligation (DMO) obligations in 2020 amounted to 131 million tons, in 2021 it was 133 million tons and increased in 2022 to 215 tons.

"It's a bit lower in 2023 because it's not over yet. Maybe around 200 too," said Irwandy.

He added that coal realization at the end of 2023, with an average monthly production of 42.6 million tons per month, until the end of December 2023, is estimated to have an additional 20 million tons of production.

"Well, if we look at the realization in the future, this might add no more than 20 million to the maximum by the end of the year," concluded Irwandy.
