Danamon And Adira Finance Collaboration In The Development Of The Tanjung Piayu Mangrove Area

JAKARTA - PT Bank Danamon Indonesia Tbk (Danamon), and PT Adira Dinamika Multi Finance Tbk (Adira Finance) as a grup are committed to being part of climate change solutions in an effort to support sustainable business development and achieve net zero carbon emissions from the company's operational activities by 2030.

Danamon and Adira Finance also have the principle of playing an active role in campaigning for reduced carbon emissions and environmental conservation by involving employees as volunteers. Towards the end of 2023, Danamon and Adira Finance collaborated in the Development of the Tanjung Piayu Mangrove Area, Batam, by planting as many as 32,000 mangrove trees and building supporting facilities such as wooden bridges and mangrove monitoring posts.

The event ceremony, which was held on Saturday, December 2, 2023, was attended by the Head of the Unit II Protected Forest Management Unit (KPHL) Batam, Lamhot Sinaga; Regional Corporate Officer Danamon Region Sumatra 1, Riana Suagiat; Head of HCGA Share Service Adira Finance, Awal Diyananda, along with Danamon and Adira Finance volunteers. On this occasion, a memorandum of understanding was also signed between Danamon and KPHL regarding commitments to mangrove planting and monitoring as well as community development.

"Climate change has caused Batam Island to experience the threat of sea level rise. Unfortunately, like other areas, mangrove forests that become natural defense experience looting and land conversion. The collaboration between Danamon and Adira Finance with the local government is expected to contain the rate of climate change and damage to mangrove forests that occur, either caused by looting or land transfer," explained the Regional Corporate Officer Danamon Region Sumatra 1, Riana Suagiat.

Based on data from the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency, about 27 percent of mangrove areas in the Riau Islands are on Batam Island. The majority of the damage and loss of mangrove land occurred in forest areas. The same data also shows that the damage to mangroves in the Riau Islands reaches 37,364 hectares, with 24,624 hectares of damaged mangrove land located in forest areas.

In an effort to restore and protect mangrove areas, KPHL Batam and the local community work together to restore affected areas and are also supported by law enforcement officials to increase protection for this area. Danamon and Adira Finance, together with the Bakau Indah Rumpun Group (RBI), took part in this effort.

In addition to planting mangroves, Danamon and Adira Finance also built bridges and monitoring posts as monitoring and security facilities for mangrove areas, especially those in forest areas.

"As a form of commitment to environmental concern which is also part of the sustainability finance program and supports the government's program to realize the Indonesia Net Zero Emission (NZE), Adira Finance collaborates with Danamon to carry out a decarbonization program involving Gardira and Danamoners such as mangrove planting. With this collaboration, it is hoped that the mangrove area in Tanjung Piayu, Batam can recover and grow into a sustainable environment, so that it can become an effective green land that absorbs carbon emissions," said Head of HCGA Share Service Adira Finance, Awal Diyananda.

Mangroves not only serve as natural bulwarks that protect islands from the threat of sea water rise, but also serve as shelters for various types of animals and plants that live in coastal ecosystems.

In addition, the existence of mangroves also has significant economic benefits. Mangrove trees can reduce damage due to abrasion, help maintain the abundance of fish and shrimp in the surrounding waters, and become an attractive natural tourist attraction for local and foreign tourists.
