JAKARTA - The use of fossil energy to meet the energy needs of the community is still needed with a transition period using natural gas before finally using renewable energy which is proven to be environmentally friendly until Net Zero Emission (NZE) is realized according to the 2060 target.

Migas Engineering and Environment Director of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Mirza Mahendra explained that the use of fossil energy considers 3 factors, namely availability, accessibility, and affordability.

"The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will continue to use fossil energy as a temporary source of energy, during the transition period to Net Zero Emission (NZE) in Indonesia. We not only discuss the environment, but we also need to consider availability, accessibility, and affordability," Mirza said, quoted on Wednesday, November 15.

According to him, fossil energy such as oil and natural gas, coal is used as an energy source for the transportation sector as well as temporary power generation fuel before replacing fuel that is more environmentally friendly.

"Gas bumi sebagai energi yang lebih ramah lingkungan dibanding minyak bumi dan batu bara, juga dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai energi transisi sebelum beralih 100 persen ke EBT di sektor transportasi dan juga pada pembangkit listrik," lanjut Mirza.

Mirza explained, in general the transition to net zero emissions requires changes that can be categorized into four pillars.

The four pillars include increasing energy intensity which helps reduce transition costs, decarbonization of power plants to reduce direct emissions in the electricity sector, switching to low-emission fuel on final use and capture, as well as, utilization and storage of carbon Capture Utilization Storage (CCUS) which reduces emissions from industries whose emissions are difficult to reduce.

Realizing the net zero emission target requires strong collaboration between various parties, Mirza explained, including institutions and institutions including academics and related industries through strong collaboration, which will achieve a greater impact in reducing emissions and moving towards net zero emissions.
