PT PLN (Persero) inaugurated the first Green Hydrogen Plant (GHP) in Indonesia, which is located in the Muara Karang Steam Gas Power Plant (PLTGU) area, Jakarta. It is known that GHP, which is developed through the subholding of PLN Nusantara Power, is capable of producing up to 51 tons of hydrogen per year.

The Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi said that the presence of the GHP was a good initiation to support efforts to develop clean energy in Indonesia.

"PLN has the fastest way to produce green hydrogen. We initially thought that producing green hydrogen would take a long time, using geothermal, solar panels. It turns out that the innovation carried out by PLN is able to accelerate the production of green hydrogen in Indonesia," said Yudo, Tuesday, October 10.

He also explained that green hydrogen is a game changer against the challenges of the energy transition. In the future, the use of green hydrogen as an alternative fuel will require many industries.

This year, the government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is finalizing the national hydrogen roadmap. Through PLN's accelerated steps in making this first GHP as evidence and reinforcement of the national hydrogen strategy roadmap.

"This year we will finalize the national hydrogen strategy. Hopefully we can get it out soon. Alhamdulillah, PLN has preceded this strategy. Before the book was released, there was evidence first," said Yudo.

PLN NP President Director Ruly Firmansyah detailed that so far his corporation has produced gray hydrogen from hydrogen plants that have been operating. However, with the use of solar PV and supported by the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC), PLN NP already has the first GHP in Indonesia.

Taking advantage of several electrolyzers with energy consumption of 2,795 Megawatt Hours (MWh) per year, PLN NP is able to produce 100 percent green hydrogen of 51 tons per year.

"Through the use of PLTS that has been installed in the Muara Karang PLTGU, we make this hydrogen green and free of CO2 emissions, so this green hydrogen is purely 100 percent of EBT," said Rully.

Through this effort, PLN NP is able to produce alternative raw materials for the industrial sector that is moving towards the green industry. In the future, PLN NP will also develop green hydrogen storage which can store these green hydrogen products so that they can be utilized in the future.
