JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) launched the Carbon Blue Lamun Mitigation Action Profile at the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) High-Level Conference (KTT) forum in Bali, today.

The release of the document is part of the government's strategy to tackle climate change and increase the potential for blue carbon.

"The Lamun Blue Carbon Mitigation Action Profile is expected to be part of increasing Indonesia's National Contribution (NDC) target in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and becoming a roadmap to determine steps towards a more sustainable and resilient future," said Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono in a written statement received by VOI, Monday, October 9.

Trenggono said the Carbon Blue Lamun Mitigation Action Profile would also serve as a roadmap for Indonesia's efforts to preserve and restore the habitat of blue carbon, as well as increase carbon storage potential for the benefit of planets and future generations.

"As the owner of 17 percent of the world's blue carbon reserves, Indonesia has a great opportunity to take advantage of the blue carbon ecosystem as a solution to overcome climate change," he said.

He considered, Indonesia is home to around 11.5 percent of the world's seagrass. Therefore, the development of blue carbon in Indonesia also needs to take into account the lamun ecosystem as an important part of the blue carbon buffer.

"The blue carbon ecosystem plays a significant role for coastal communities whose living and living spaces have the potential to be affected by climate-related coalstal risk, such as extreme weather, storms, erosion, floods, and so on," said Trenggono.

Furthermore, Trenggono said, that in the Profile of the Carbon Blue Lamun Mitigation Action, Indonesia will focus on intervening in regulations on sea space utilization and restoring seagrass fields.

As a result, it is projected that there will be a significant reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.

In addition, the KKP encourages the public to participate in efforts to protect seafarers, and be actively involved in efforts to collect traffic data.

"To support this, an application that is easy to use is being developed by the community and the construction of the Blue Carbon Room, which is a centralized space to monitor blue carbon activity in Indonesia," he concluded.

For your information, the Blue Carbon Lamun Mitigation Action Profile is a collaboration between the Indonesian KKP and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) which contains the results of calculations on emission reduction from the seagrass ecosystem which aims to preserve and restore the habitat of blue carbon, as well as increase the potential for carbon storage.
