JAMBI - Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan released 18 tons of betel nut seed exports from Jambi to Bangladesh.

"Jambi with its mainstay commodities has a big role for the export of betel nut from Indonesia," said Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan during the release of commodity exports from Jambi at Talang Duku Port Jambi as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, September 23.

The export value of betel seed commodities to Bangladesh has reached USD 16,970.

In addition to betel nut seeds, the Minister of Trade also released the exports of several other commodities from Jambi, namely five-container rubber products worth USD 80 thousand with a country bound for Mexico.

In addition, Jambi Province also exports dry copra with a total of 24,300 tons to Pakistan, and exports of 26 tons of coconut title to India.

The Trade Minister also emphasized that exports experienced successive surpluses for 40 months. In 2022 the export value of the surplus is almost IDR 900 trillion.

Jambi Province, he said, has a big role in the export value derived from several Jambi main commodities such as beinang, cinnamon, cloves, coffee, and others.

Even so, he stressed, Indonesia also faces challenges for the export of betel nut to India. This is because India has strong protection to protect betel nut farmers in its country. So it is still difficult to export Indonesian betel nut to the country.

The Trade Minister said that apart from coconut and rubber, betel nut is also Indonesia's leading product in the international market.

There are 14 provinces that have good areas for food crops including Jambi, North Sumatra, and Aceh with a total area of 152 thousand hectares throughout Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Jambi Province is the center for betel nut production which accounts for almost 40 percent of national production.

The quality of betel nut products from Jambi, he said, is quite high compared to other countries. However, currently there are export barriers such as the implementation of a minimum import price (MPI) to India, the application of high import duty rates in India, Iran and the UAE.
