JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI) made various efforts to continue to improve the quality of human resources (HR) to be reliable and professional. One way, through certification for frontline employees carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA).

Several professions such as the driver, assistant driver, train travel controller (PPKA), inspection and maintenance of train facilities, inspection and maintenance of train infrastructure, as well as track road guards must be certified before carrying out their duties.

According to VP of Public Relations of KAI Joni Martinus, the certification is a standard of competence. So, the employees who are at the forefront of the train must have a certificate of skills.

"Employees who work in the field of work must have certification. If they do not or do not have a certificate of skills, they are not allowed to carry out this type of work. Employees who have been certified and deemed competent to serve will have identification certificates (smart cards) issued by DJKA," said Joni quoting a written statement, Thursday, March 23.

Certificates of competence have a validity period of four years, depending on the position of the employee in question, adjusting to positions whose competence is regulated in the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation.

Furthermore, Joni explained that certification was obtained after attending education and training. Railway HR education and training can be carried out by legal entities or institutions that have received accreditation from the ministry.

"Those who received the certificate have previously completed a series of educational processes of expertise in their respective fields of work," explained Joni.

KAI routinely certifies its employees who serve in several professions mentioned above. Until January 2, 2023, said Joni, around 10,420 employees have been certified and ready to carry out their official duties.

Certification of skills is very necessary because it is an acknowledgment of employees who have knowledge, skills and work attitudes in accordance with the required work competency standards. Thus, employees who have been certified are guaranteed their credibility in carrying out a job that is their duty and responsibility. This certification obligation is also one of KAI's efforts to control the risk of train travel accidents caused by human error factors.

"With the certification carried out, KAI wants to provide a sense of security and comfort to its customers. People do not need to hesitate to use train services because every employee who is serving, we make sure it is certified and ready to serve customers well," concluded Joni.
