Mario Kart 8 And Splatoon Games At Wii U Suddenly Offline, Nintendo Admits There Are Security Problems!

JAKARTA - Nintendo has reportedly removed online features from the Wii U console version of Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon games, claimed to be due to security vulnerabilities.

VGC's online media reported the game went offline at 23:30 ET last night and the company said the fix could take days. The Nintendo Switch game version is not affected.

"Splatoon, Mario Kart 8 This network service is currently not available because urgent maintenance is needed to fix vulnerabilities related to online games," Nintendo wrote on the server's operational status page.

"We don't have any information on when network services can be restored. We apologize for the inconvenience caused. (Disadvantage Code: 106-0811)," he added.

The security issue is claimed to be an exploit, where attackers can take control of the victim's system only by matching it when they are in an online multiplayer game.

Data miner Nintendo, known as OatmealDome, said the matter was almost certain because ENLBufferPwn is said to have been overcome by Nintendo by releasing patches for several games on the Switch and even Mario Kart 7 in 3DS.

It seems that several other Nintendo Switch games are also vulnerable to being infiltrated, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Splatoon 2 and 3. The company appears to have patched all the titles to protect it from exploitation.

Launching The Verge, Saturday, March 4, Wii U's all-time best-selling game was Mario Kart 8 and has sold more than 8 million copies. But the game at Wii U was discontinued in 2017 as it sold only 13.56 million units in total.

The system is widely considered a failure and sold out by its successor, Nintendo Switch in just 10 months. Now, Nintendo is still trying to fix the problem with Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon for Wii U even though the console is no longer working and plans to remove sales of Wii U eShop this month.
