KKP Needs To Develop WPP Bases To Encourage Downstream Fisheries

Assistant Deputy for Capture Fisheries for the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) Ikram Malan Sangadji said the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) must develop a base for Fishery Management Areas (WPP) to encourage fisheries downstreaming in Indonesia.

"I think physically there is no need to discuss it, but what is the KKP policy to strengthen the WPP base. WPP as a fishery ecosystem must be utilized by the KKP, because there is a strong fisheries base," Ikram told reporters in the Pasar Minggu area, South Jakarta, Monday, February 20.

According to Ikram, the development of WPP has dominated literacy and regulation. However, the real conditions for fisheries management at the WPP itself are not very visible.

"With the WPP basis, people catch (fish), yes, he will land there and will process it, so the downstream process runs," he said.

Therefore, said Ikram, the government must re-strengthen the WPP basis. Because, without the WPP, the government is unable to carry the fisheries strategy as a whole.

"We don't need to think about measurable fishing, it's a tool, yes. If the road fishing policy is measured, what should be strengthened is the WPP basis, even though measurable fishing is used by zones," he explained.

For your information, WPP is a Fisheries Management Area (WPP) in Indonesia which is divided into 11 regions, including WPP 571, 572, 573, 711, 712, 713, 714, 715, 716, 717, and 718.

WPP 571 covers the waters of the Malacca Strait and Andaman Sea, WPP 572 covers the waters of the West Indian Ocean Sumatra and the Sunda Strait, WPP 573 covering the waters of the Indian Ocean south of Java to south of Nusa Tenggara, Savu Sea, and the West part of the Timor Sea.

Then, WPP 711 covers the waters of the Karimata Strait, Natuna Sea, and South China Sea, WPP 712 covering the waters of the Java Sea, WPP 713 covering the waters of the Makassar Strait, Bone Bay, Flores Sea, and Bali Sea, WPP 714 covering the waters of Teluk Tolo and Banda Sea.

Furthermore, WPP 715 covers the waters of Tomini Bay, Maluku Sea, Halmahera Sea, Seram Sea and Berau Bay, WPP 716 covering the waters of the Sulawesi Sea and north of Halmahera Island, WPP 717 covering the waters of Cendrawasih Bay and Pacific Ocean, and WPP 718 covering the waters of the Aru Sea, Arafuru Sea, and East Timor Sea.
