Maut Clashes Of Smelter Workers In North Morowali, DPR Asks The Government To Revoke The Permit Of PT GNI

Member of Commission VII DPR RI Mulyanto asked the government to re-evaluate the permit for the PT Gunbuter Nickel Industry (GNI) smelter operation after the deadly clashes that killed two workers on Saturday, January 14.

Previously, two employees were also killed in the GNI smelter fire on Thursday, December 22, 2022.

"The government should not underestimate the clashes that killed the two employees," said Mulyanto in a statement to the media, Tuesday, January 17.

Mulyanto assessed that this was triggered by more basic problems, not solely because of misunderstandings between working groups.

"Moreover, this clash occurred after a fire incident occurred and an employee strike," he continued.

For this reason, he again urged the government to revoke the smelter operation permit and evaluate the K3, as well as conduct technology audits.

If proven negligent, Mulyato asked the government to permanently revoke PT GNI's smelter business license.

"What we are also worried about is that this factory adopts outdated technology systems, low-quality equipment components, as well as high-risk and harmful technology management for workers and society," he concluded.

Previously, there was an anarchist demonstration at the location of the nickel processing industry (smelter) PT. Gunbuster Nickel Industri (GNI) in Bunta Village, East Petasia District on Saturday afternoon, January 14.

The riots that occurred in the PT. The GNI reportedly caused two fatalities (died), a TKI and a foreign worker as well as considerable material losses.

It was also reported that there was looting in the TKI women's dormitory as well as burning company assets.

Around 70 people have been detained by the police for thorough investigation of the anarchist's actions.
