BALI - PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GoTo) and PT TBS Energi Utama Tbk (TBS) through their joint venture company, Electrum, are committed to reducing carbon emissions and encouraging energy transition by providing electric motors in Indonesia.

This effort is in line with the government's commitment to the Agreement which targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent with its own efforts, and 41 percent with international support by 2030, as well as Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060.

In the Sustainable Transportation Forum 2022 in Nusa Dua, Bali, Friday, October 21, both parties are targeting to provide 500 units of electric motors by the end of 2022, where currently the number in circulation has reached 400 units.

Currently, the electric motor is provided to assist the operations of Gojek driver partners, as well as as an initial trial to test their capabilities and performance.

"Where these two companies (GoTo and TBS) are trying to minimize carbon emissions by 2030," said Managing Director of Electrum Patrick Adhiatmadja, quoted by Antara.

Currently, Electrum provides two types of electric motorcycle brands, namely Gogoro from Taiwan and Gesits produced by PT WIKA Industri Manufacturing (WIMA), a subsidiary of PT Wijaya Karya Tbk (WIKA).

As for the results of the trial, it was found that every electric motor that covered a distance of 1 million kilometers (km), managed to prevent the emergence of 85 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). The trial was carried out on hundreds of electric motorcycles of the two brands, with a distance of four million kilometers (km) until October 2022, so it is claimed that it has prevented the emergence of 340 tons of CO2.

"We are here as part of an ecosystem where we will partner with the government to be able to drive two electric motorcycle products with end to end," Patrick said.

Furthermore, Electrum will also increase the number of swap stations or battery exchange sites which are currently still limited in the testing area, namely South Jakarta and Nusa Dua, Bali. This swap station provides many batteries that are fully charged, so drivers only need 2-3 minutes when changing batteries.

"Gojek's partner ecosystem is also our ecosystem. And no less important is Pertamina, which provides facilities for swap stations at their gas stations," said Patrick.

Patrick conveyed three challenges in the electric motorcycle business today, namely first, infrastructure, where there are still many preparations needed, such as increasing swap stations in various places.

Second, in terms of supply, where there is still a lack of ability to finance and provide after-sales services. Third, on the demand side, where the needs of the Indonesian people for vehicles must be met by the facilities provided in a motorbike.
