JAKARTA - PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said PLN opened the widest collaboration in order to deal with energy crises and climate change.

He explained that strategic alliances are absolutely necessary to build national energy capacity in order to develop environmentally friendly power generation technology.

Towards net zero emission 2060, a technology is needed that can replace fossil energy plants to bear the basic load or support system stability, including electricity supply for remote or archipelagic areas. PLN's in-depth study of energy system management is remoted," explained Darmawan in his statement, Monday, September 26.

PT PLN (Persero) has signed several memorandums of understanding (MoU) between PLN and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Kyudenko Corporation, as well as with the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI) related to low-carbon technology.

Darmawan is optimistic that cooperation in the development of EBT in isolated areas is important for the future.

"It is hoped that the results of the study can provide an overview and model of the plan to increase the EBT mix in isolated areas by up to 100 percent," said Darmawan.

Director of Geothermal at the Directorate General of EBTKE of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Harris Yahya added that the government has committed to gradually transitioning energy until 2060.

That is, in the next few years fossil-based power plants will no longer exist, for that it is necessary to immediately think about a replacement.

Currently our EBT capacity is around 8.5 GW, it has not maximized the potential we have. So we need to break down again for the development of solar, geothermal, water, wind, and sea," explains Harris.

Director of New Renewable Project and Energy Management of PLN Wiluyo Kusdwiharto explained that the signing of the MoU was a manifestation of PLN's commitment to developing a reliable EBT system in Indonesia.

The three cooperation agreements for EBT technology studies include:

1. PLN together with JICA and Kyudenko Corporation regarding Joint Studies 100 percent of electricity supply from new and renewable energy-based plants in remote areas.

2. PLN together with CREEI regarding Cooperation in the Technical Support Program for Low Carbon Technology and Environmental and Social Protection.

3. PLN together with the Center for Electricity Survey and Testing and EBTKE regarding the New Renewable Energy Plant Survey and Study Program.

From the MoU with CREEI PLN, we will get an intensive transfer of knowledge in the face of the energy transition and towards net zero emissions. Meanwhile, the memorandum of understanding with JICA will provide a study of the EBT development model in remote areas," he said.

On the other hand, PLN has also entered into a contract with PT Haskoning Indonesia regarding the ESIA Consulting Services & LARAP Masang II Hindroppower. Wiluyo hopes that with this collaboration PLN will get funding from AFD for the Masang I hydropower project.

Previously, based on Aide-mémoire AFD Energy Mission 26/11/2018 30/11/2018, AFD required the work of ESIA/LARAP for PLTA Masang II as a prerequisite for project implementation funding.

Wiluyo said PLN is committed to implementing the Lender policy in order to draw up a project plan for category A in accordance with regulations for the development of Environmental and Social Impact Assets (ESIA) and the Land Acquisition and Resettlement Action Plan (LARAP).
