Economists Call The PDP Law To Make Consumer More Comfortable In Digital Transaction

JAKARTA - The Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP) has just been ratified by the DPR RI.

The presence of this law is considered to have a positive impact on the Indonesian economy. The reason is, financial and business transactions become safer and more comfortable.

"Consumers will be safer and more willing to transact more in-platform which guarantees the security of their data. That's why indirectly it has an impact on the economy through more consumption," said Indef Economist Nailul Huda to reporters, Tuesday, September 20.

Although not fully protected, according to Nailul, at least if there is a leak, consumers will be able to sue third parties.

"Finally it becomes a disincentive for third parties if the data is leaked. Then they will strengthen the security of their data," said Nailul.

Then to oversee this process, Nailul proposed that an independent supervisory body be formed.

"Personal data protection supervisory bodies such as referees who decide whether or not a third party is guilty in cases of leakage of our personal data. So it does require a more independent referee because leakage cases also occur on government-owned platforms," explained Nailul.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto explained the potential of the digital economy in Indonesia.

The value of Indonesia's digital economy is also predicted to increase by double to 146 billion US dollars by 2025.

The government continues to strive to accelerate digital transformation to support Indonesia's digital economy improvement in the future.

"Strengthening digital transformation is the key to unlocking our potential in global competitiveness and long-term development, empowering people and businesses to seize new market opportunities, especially for post-pandemic recovery," said Airlangga.

In order to create a conducive digital business climate, said Airlangga, one of which is the government is is issuing this Personal Data Protection Law.

"The government encourages the issuance of adaptive, agile, and progressive regulations, in the end being one of the important requirements in creating a healthy digital business climate," he explained. Accompaniment of Micro Enterprises Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Mohammad Faisal said that actually the coverage of digital transformation acceleration has quite extraordinary coverage so that it can benefit the economy.

However, the main thing is the assistance of small and medium enterprises which are very large in Indonesia.

The government is asked not only to prepare infrastructure and digital platforms, but also to provide assistance from upstream to downstream so that business actors can be more competitive and able to compete on digital platforms.

"So to business actors there is a transformation that makes them really have an increase in added value from their business because they are digitized," said Faisal.

Faisal assessed that this was important in efforts to accelerate digital transformation.

The government is also asked to ensure that the perpetrators and products come from within the country.

"That's at its core, so how to provide assistance to ensure that users from digital platforms are many of domestic actors, their products are also from within the country. That's the most important thing," he concluded.
