JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) through its subsidiary, PT Pembangkitan Jawa-Bali (PJB) collaborated with IHI Corporation in research, development of hydrogen and ammonia as fuel to replace coal (co-firing) for steam power plants (PLTU).

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was carried out by the Executive Officer of the President of Global Marketing & Sales Headquarters IHI Corporation, Kiyoshi Nihei and Director of Development and Commerce of PT PJB, Iwan Purwana in Jakarta.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said PLN has the spirit to achieve the Carbon Neutral target by 2060 and has carried out various efforts to make it happen.

PLN is committed to developing development with the environment and the community throughout its business scope.

"Until now, we have always encouraged the use of co-firing at our PLTU. Currently, PLN has succeeded in implementing co-firing at 32 PLTUs and 15 PLTUs that are in the testing phase. Cooperation with IHI strengthens PLN committees in promoting clean energy, especially the use of ammonia to support the achievement of carbon neutral in 2060," said Darmawan in an official statement, Friday, September 2.

PJB as a subsidiary of PLN together with IHI Corporation has similarities in accelerating decarbonization using alternative technologies such as co-firing and mono-firing.

IHI itself is a company engaged in the carbon reduction solution supply business to achieve higher efficiency and the operation of power plants.

Director of Development and Commerce of PT PJB, Iwan Purwana explained, the use of ammonia as fuel can encourage the achievement of greener energy, this is because the NH3 ammonia does not contain carbon elements, so it does not produce greenhouse gas emissions.

In the midst of the increasingly dynamic electricity industry, the use of co-firing is one of the pillars in the transformation of PLN in which PJB plays an important role in the development of co-firing at the PLTU it manages.

Through this collaboration, Iwan hopes to accelerate the energy transition process for a greener Indonesia.

IHI Corporation itself has succeeded in developing a 20 percent ammonia co-firing and seeing the potential for the application of the same technology at the PLTU managed by PJB.

Through further discussions, PJB and IHI agreed to conduct a trial use of co-firing and mono-firing ammonia at the Gresik Unit 1-2 PLTU with a capacity of 2x100 MW and made it a pilot project.

Executive Officer of the President of Global Marketing & Sales Headquarters IHI Corporation, Kiyoshi Nihei hopes that the formation of cooperation can provide reinforcement in the use of co-firing.

"We see the competence and quality of CHD in managing its generating unit. We assess that PJB can be Indonesia's representative in encouraging decarbonization and realizing a greener environment through the massive implementation of co-firing innovations," said Kiyoshi.

The collaboration between CHB and IHI in this ammonia trial is also an effort to support the implementation of the G20.

Later, PLN and Indonesia will be recognized worldwide as countries that prioritize environmental issues in the development of environmental-based energy production.
