JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has completed the construction of the Wae Mese II Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM) which is intended to meet the needs of clean water for residents of Labuan Bajo City, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"Infrastructure development at each Super Priority Tourism Destination is planned in an integrated manner, including regional planning, roads, supply of raw water and clean water, waste management, sanitation, and improvement of population housing through a master plan for infrastructure development that considers environmental, social and economic aspects," said PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono in a written statement quoted by Antara, Friday, June 3.

SPAM Wae Mese II is built with a capacity of 2 x 50 liters per second. The project, which began work in November 2020, was completed in early 2022.

The scope of work includes the construction of raw water intakes, raw water transmission piping networks, clean water treatment systems and distribution reservoirs. This project is carried out by contractor PT Amarta Karya with a contract value of Rp. 105.05 billion.

The water source comes from the Wae Mese River and will flow to the Wae Mata Reservoir with a capacity of 2,000 m3 to serve five reservoirs, namely Bappeda, Golokoe, Firdaus, Mirror Cave and DPRD Reservoirs. SPAM Wae Mese II complements SPAM Wae Mese which was previously built with a capacity of 40 liters/second.

Director General of Human Settlements at the PUPR Ministry Diana Kusumastuti said the construction of the Wae Mese SPAM is not only to provide water for buildings that have been built by the PUPR Ministry, but the benefits must also be felt by the local community.

"What we have to understand is that water in NTT Province is difficult. So, apart from being a tourist area, we will also build it for the community," Diana said.

In addition to providing clean water, the Ministry of PUPR through the Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (BPPW) of East Nusa Tenggara has also built sanitation facilities in the form of the Labuan Bajo Waste Water Treatment Plant (IPAL) with a capacity of 250 m3/day. The Labuan Bajo WWTP was built in the 2020-2021 FY with a budget of Rp. 11.3 billion.
