Supporting 57 Percent Of The National Economy, Java's Growth Turns Out To Be Defeated From Maluku And Papua

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed that Java Island will still be the main contributor to the Indonesian economy in early 2022.

Head of BPS Margo Yuwono said that this strategic area supported more than half of the achievements recorded in the first quarter of 2022.

In her presentation, Margo said that the island of Java contributed 57.78 percent. This was followed by Sumatra with 21.96 percent, Kalimantan with 8.29 percent, Sulawesi with 6.73 percent, Bali and Nusa Tenggara with 2.66 percent, and Maluku and Papua with 2.58 percent.

"The spatial structure of Indonesia's economy during the first quarter of 2022 was still dominated by the group of provinces on the island of Java, which contributed to GDP (gross domestic product) of 57.78 percent," he said through a virtual channel on Monday, May 9.

However, Margo explained that Java Island is not the area with the highest economic growth record in Indonesia because it was only able to make an increase of 5.07 percent in the first quarter of 2022.

The highest growth level was actually achieved in the Maluku and Papua regions with growth of 10.75 percent. Followed by Sulawesi which grew 5.37 percent, Sumatra 4.03 percent, Bali and Nusa Tenggara 3.42 percent, and Kalimantan which amounted to 3.21 percent.

"The conclusion is that the driver of the national economy is still Java because it has a large share," he said.

Furthermore, Margo also said that Indonesia's economic growth in the first quarter of 2022 was recorded at 5.01 percent on an annual basis (year on year / yoy) when compared to the same period in 2021.

As for quarter to quarter (qtq), Indonesia's economic growth at the beginning of this year was lower than the fourth quarter of 2021 with a contraction of 0.96 percent.
