JAKARTA - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin reminded that various countries that are not predominantly Muslim have started to enliven the global halal market competition. Indonesia, said Ma'ruf, as a country with a majority Muslim population, must be able to become a world halal producer by 2024.

The countries in question to enliven the global halal market rivalry are Thailand, Australia, the United States, Brazil, China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

"Therefore, Indonesia must be able to take the opportunity to become a world producer of halal products, as stated by President Joko Widodo so that Indonesia becomes the center of world halal production by 2024," he said at the virtual opening of the Road to Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week Seminar, Wednesday, April 6.

According to Ma'ruf, competition for halal commodity producers is also increasing. This is in line with the number of countries participating in the competition for the production of halal products, including countries where the majority of the population is not Muslim.

Furthermore, Ma'ruf explained, that halal commodities actually have advantages other than being a religious commandment, namely guaranteeing cleanliness and health for consumers.

In fact, Ma'ruf said that halal products such as food, beverages, fashion, and even medicines are increasingly enjoyed by people outside of Islam.

"To become part of the lifestyle and trend of global trade competition (currently)," he explained.

Moreover, said Ma'ruf, by 2030, the number of Muslims is predicted to reach around a quarter of the world's population. The estimated development of this demographic level is directly proportional to the widespread awareness of consumption of halal products.

"This means that the development of halal production which is currently increasingly becoming a lifestyle for the world community will increasingly encourage an increase in demand for halal products," he said.
