JAKARTA - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Rachmat Gobel, has asked the government and law enforcement officials to eradicate rogue foreign exchange (forex/foreign exchange) trade that moves in areas and causes trouble for the community.

"This will weaken national resilience and further impoverish the community," said Rachmat Gobel in a written statement, quoted from Antara, Thursday, December 23.

He expressed this at the Quick Response Code Indonesia Standard (QRIS) socialization in Gorontalo, Wednesday (22/12), which was held by Bank Indonesia.

At the event he said he had received many reports regarding the rise of rogue foreign exchange or forex trading in areas that promised high profits ranging from 20-40 percent of the money deposited with brokers.

"Initially they were right, they gave them a profit. So there was trust and they increased their deposit, after that they ran away," said the Deputy Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives Coordinator for Industry and Development (Korinbang).

The way it operates, he said, is that forex brokers usually attract public figures and work with elements in the government and officials as an angler and shaper of public trust.

"After they managed to stay in an area for a certain period of time and hundreds of billions or trillions of rupiah had been collected, they then ran away," said Rachmat Gobel.

What makes Gobel even more sad is that these rogue forex brokers also take advantage of the People's Business Credit Program (KUR) that the government is intensifying to eradicate poverty and build economic equity with low interest rates.

"These rogue Forex traders will help the community to get KUR. They are generally farmers, small traders, and micro and small business actors. After the KUR is liquidated, they take the money for the forex business, which is then taken away," he said.

Therefore, he requested that the government and law enforcement officers arrest rogue forex networks operating in the regions.

"This is tantamount to sabotage of the national economy and government programs. They must be punished severely," said Rachmat Gobel.

The former Minister of Trade admitted that forex trading is under the authority of the Commodity Futures Trading Supervisory Agency (CoFTRA) at the Ministry of Trade.

Rachmat Gobel appealed to the public not to be easily tempted by the lure and false hopes that promise high profits, even though there are figures or unscrupulous officials.

"Earn money by sweating. Not laying money which ends up hurting the people. Take advantage of money by trying, not by sitting around and the money will come by itself. Let's only trade concrete things, also farming, raising livestock, or starting a home business. As long as If you do it seriously and in the right way, it will be great," said Rachmat Gobel.
