JAKARTA - Indonesia and Britain have agreed to improve bilateral relations. As directed by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), the cooperation between the two countries will focus on the green economy sector.

SOE Minister Erick Thohir said while accompanying the Head of State on a working visit to attend the COP26 World Leaders Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, President Jokowi took the time to hold a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

"Indonesia and Britain have agreed to improve bilateral relations between the two countries. The President also aims to focus on cooperation in the green economy," Erick said through his Instagram account @erickthohir, quoted on Tuesday, November 2.

Erick revealed that there were a number of points discussed in the meeting. One of them is about developing a green economy.

It is noted that the government is aiming for a massive green economy. Not only that, the agreement and the official meeting carried out are also evidence of Indonesia's commitment to pursue and implement the Paris Agreement to reduce carbon gas emissions.

The result of this commitment is that Indonesia will achieve zero carbon emissions by 2060 or sooner. Therefore, Jokowi promised that the sector that contributes the most pollution will be suppressed and reach peak emissions by 2030.

The government noted that Indonesia has the potential for natural resources such as tropical forests that can be used sustainably for the lungs of the world. To strengthen this green economy, energy transformation towards new and renewable energy must be initiated.

As is known, Indonesia is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29 percent with its own capabilities and 41 percent with international support by 2030.
