Iranian President Denies Rumors of Resignation

JAKARTA - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday denied rumors that he had resigned from his post amid an escalation of the military conflict with the United States.

"If I were to resign, I would definitely announce it publicly. I will not resign and I will continue the struggle," Pezeshkian said in a speech broadcast by the news agency, reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Tuesday, August 4.

The statement was made to dispel the news that was broadcast by the Iranian opposition media Pezeshkian several times trying to ask for his resignation to the Supreme Leader of Iran Mojtaba Khamenei.

He also denied there was a dispute with Khamenei and the Iranian armed forces, while stressing that they worked in full harmony.

"Everyone knows that if there is a dispute, the armed forces will definitely be on Khamenei's side," said Pezeshkian.

Iran is at war with the United States as the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran in February. Iran then retaliated with missile attacks and drones on Gulf countries that have US military assets.

Then, the US and Iran agreed to a ceasefire in April, followed by the signing of a peace memorandum reached through Pakistani mediation in June to stop the military conflict and realize a peace agreement.

However, the deal failed to materialize last month after the US and Iran launched attacks against each other for almost two weeks.

US President Donald Trump then suddenly stopped the air raids amid news of talks to resolve the conflict.
