JAKARTA - South Korean authorities on Tuesday detained eight members of a liberal student group after they attempted to enter a US air base south of the capital Seoul, according to local media reports.
The student activists were detained at K-55 Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Seoul, according to a report by the Yonhap News Agency, citing South Korean police, reported by Anadolu (4/8).
The activists, all members of the Korean Progressive University Students' Union (KPUSU), broke through the main gate of the base.
Six people entered the compound shouting anti-US slogans, including slogans against the US 7th Air Force, while two others were stopped at the entrance.
US forces in Korea (USFK) detained the group before handing them over to South Korean police for investigation.
Meanwhile, KPUSU in its social media post said the protest was related to their claim that US forces had blocked plans to build a South Korean semiconductor manufacturing cluster in the city of Gwangju in the southwest.
The South Korean government has designated a military airport in Gwangju as the location of the proposed chip production center.
Meanwhile, the US military has expressed concern that the relocation of the airport could affect its military interests.
The group of students also cited the recent white phosphorus leak at Osan Air Base as another reason for the demonstration.
