Forest Fire in Mount Bromo Spread to 7.9 hectares

Probolinggo - Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Probolinggo Regency, Oemar Sjarief, said that the forest and land fires (karhutla) in Mount Bromo spread from Bantengan Block in Lumajang Regency to Watu Gede area in Probolinggo Regency with an area of 7.9 hectares.

"BPBD Probolinggo Regency personnel carried out a blackout in the Bromo Mountain area, between Bantengan Block to Pusung Jantur. The fire entered the administrative area of Sariwani Village, Sukapura District, Probolinggo Regency," he said as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, August 4.

The Probolinggo Regency BPBD Rapid Response Team personnel together with the East Java BPBD, Perhutani, TNI/Polri, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) Headquarters, East Java Disaster Management Agency and volunteers united to put out the forest fire in the Bromo Mountain tourist area.

"The fire is still burning and spreading to the east. The area burned is estimated to be 7.9 hectares, but it is possible to increase because the fire point has not been extinguished 100 percent," he said.

He said officers put out the fire on Mount Bromo using makeshift tools, namely by gepyok and backpack sprayer, but officers had difficulty putting out the flames, because the terrain was quite steep and the wind was quite strong.

"The joint team continues to monitor, make a barrier so that the fire does not spread, and prepare equipment to carry out fire prevention efforts in the TNBTS area so that it does not spread further," he said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the fire point leading to Probolinggo had gone out, but officers remained on alert to anticipate the emergence of a new fire point due to strong winds.

As a result of the fire, the TNBTS Headquarters closed part of the Bromo Mountain tourist access from the Jemplang and Coban Trisula entrances in Malang Regency as well as Senduro in Lumajang Regency to maximize efforts to extinguish the fire and ensure the safety aspects of all tourists.

The closure of the three accesses was carried out since Monday (3/8) at 22.00 WIB until the time limit has not been determined, but tourists can visit Mount Bromo from the Cemoro Lawang entrance in Probolinggo Regency and Wonokitri in Pasuruan Regency.

Tourists can only access the Pasir Laut area and are not allowed to move to the savannah area, because it is dangerous due to forest fires.
