Peace Council Urges Israel and Hamas to Comply with Obligations Under the Ceasefire Framework

JAKARTA - The Peace Council on Monday urged Israel and Hamas to fulfill their obligations under the agreed Gaza ceasefire framework, saying further progress depended on the compliance of both parties.

"Continued progress towards full implementation depends on the fulfillment of the obligations of each party under the agreed framework," the council said in a statement on the social media platform X, Anadolu reported (4/8).

The statement followed a meeting between the council's chief envoy for Gaza, Nickolay Mladenov, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The meeting was held as part of the Gaza disarmament process, facilitating a transition to civilian government and creating "a safer future in the region for Israeli and Palestinian residents of Gaza," the council said.

"The meeting was constructive and detailed. Israel and the Peace Council have a common understanding of the ultimate goal," he added. "The goal is clear and unquestionable: complete disarmament in the Gaza Strip and a transition from a government with weapons to a civilian government," he explained.

Furthermore, the council also stated that achieving this goal "will be a process" whose details will be outlined in the next phase.

"Contrary to inaccurate reports, we note that the full withdrawal of the IDF (Israeli army) outside the Green Line will only take place after the disarmament is completed, as Hamas has promised to the mediators," he explained.

"This applies to light weapons, heavy weapons, and tunnels," the Peace Council said.

The council added that implementation would be overseen by the International Stabilization Force and the Implementation Verification Committee, of which the US and the Peace Council are represented.

Last Friday, the Peace Council released a draft agreement outlining the principles and implementation mechanisms for the next phase of US President Donald Trump's Gaza plan, including security, administrative and transitional arrangements in the region, as well as proposed political tracks.
