Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Coordinates with Japanese Authorities and Indonesian Community after Kumamoto Earthquake

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo continues to monitor the development of the situation and coordinates with Japanese authorities and the WNI community knot, after the earthquake that shook the Kumamoto Region, Japan.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 shook the Kumamoto region, specifically on Kyusu Island, Japan on Tuesday (28/7).

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its statement that the earthquake caused a number of damages to facilities and residents' houses.

Based on reports, there were several aftershocks, while the tsunami warning that had been issued had been lifted.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo continues to monitor the development of the situation after the earthquake," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement, Wednesday (29/7).

"The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has contacted the WNI community nodes in the Kumamoto and Kyusu regions. So far, there have been no reports of WNI affected by the earthquake in both areas. All of them are reported to be in a safe condition," continued the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo urges all Indonesian citizens in the accreditation area to remain calm and continue to monitor official information regarding the development of the situation through the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, will continue to monitor the development of the situation, as well as coordinate with Japanese authorities and the WNI community in the Kumamoto and Kyusu regions," wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Meanwhile, Japanese authorities on Wednesday morning announced two women were dead and one was unconscious hours after an explosion rocked a shopping mall in Kyushu, following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on Tuesday.

Gas leaks are suspected to be the cause of the explosion after an earthquake hit Kumamoto Prefecture at around 16.27 on Tuesday, according to a government source. Ten people were previously missing at the scene, according to the prefectural government.

The Japanese Self-Defense Forces (SDF) were involved in rescue operations at the Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima, with Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi saying about 3,600 SDF personnel had been mobilized across the disaster-stricken area.
