Jakarta Prepares Artificial Rain, BMKG Places Equipment in High Buildings

JAKARTA - BMKG together with BPBD DKI Jakarta installed ground base generators in a number of high-rise buildings to trigger rain when the capital experienced a long day without rain.

Head of BMKG Teuku Faisal Fathani said the technology was used on a situational basis, especially when air quality deteriorated due to drought.

"When there are healthy clouds, water vapor or flares will be released so that it can rain," said Faisal at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 28.

According to Faisal, the operation is carried out if Jakarta is not rained for about two to three weeks and there are still clouds that can be used.

Faisal emphasized that weather modification could not be carried out without the presence of clouds.

"If there are no clouds, we can't modify," he said.

He said that artificial rain is expected to help lower the air temperature and improve the quality of Jakarta's air when the drought lasts long enough.

The operation was carried out through coordination between the BMKG and the DKI Jakarta BPBD according to the developing weather conditions.
