Bishops' Meeting in Asia Runs Without Incidents, Security Depends on Early Detection

JAKARTA - The XII Plenary Session of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) in Jakarta on July 20-26, 2026 took place without security disruptions. The security team relies on early detection, cross-agency coordination, and a humanistic approach so that all agendas run safely without disturbing spiritual activities.

The meeting was attended by more than 120 cardinals and bishops from 22 episcopal conferences and ecclesiastical jurisdictions in Asia. The session raised the theme "The Call to Synodal Conversion and the Mission to Be Bridges and Bridge-Builders in Asia."

The security was led by Brigadier General TNI (Purn.) P. Gunung Sarasmoro and Inspector General of Police (Purn.) Herry Dahana. Both of them are from the Ordinariatus Castrensis Indonesia or the Catholic Church in the TNI-Polri environment.

Gunung said the security was designed to keep people feeling safe without having the police present in a conspicuous way.

"The measure of success is not the number of personnel who are visible, but when participants can pray, dialogue, and follow the entire agenda calmly. Security must be present, but not interfere," he said as quoted in a written statement Sunday, July 26.

According to Gunung, the security system is adaptive and focuses on prevention. Officers are also asked to maintain a friendly attitude so that the atmosphere of the event remains warm.

Herry added that security for international activities cannot be separated from service to guests. According to Herry, officers are the first party to deal with delegations since arriving at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

"Politeness, good communication, and respect for diversity are part of our duties," he said.

He said that the potential for disruption not only comes from physical threats, but also the risks that develop in the digital space. Therefore, the team prepares for the exchange of information quickly, cross-agency coordination, and anticipation steps before disruptions develop.

Security was initiated by mapping vulnerability, preparing mitigation, and contingency plans for all agendas and VIP guests.

According to Gunung, the smooth trial was the result of joint work between the TNI, Polri, government, airport area managers, FABC committee, OCI, and other supporting elements.

"The greatest reward is not only because there are no incidents, but when the participants go home with the impression that they feel safe, respected, and accepted as brothers," he said.
