JAKARTA - PT PAM Jaya (Perseroda) asked PT Moya Indonesia to be fully responsible for the death of three sub-contractor workers in the construction project of a clean water distribution network in the area in front of Pintu III of Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), Cipayung, East Jakarta.

In addition to requesting a thorough investigation, PAM Jaya also prepared sanctions against the project implementation company.

The three workers were reported to have died while working inside the sewer channel on Thursday, July 9. Based on initial information in the field, the incident was allegedly triggered by a lack of oxygen or exposure to gas in the channel where the work took place.

President Commissioner of PT PAM Jaya Prasetyo Edi Marsudi expressed condolences over the incident.

"We are very, very sad and empathetic to the victims who died during construction work," Prasetyo said in his statement, Friday, July 10.

PAM Jaya stated that it had asked PT Moya Indonesia to conduct an investigation with relevant parties to uncover the exact cause of the accident. The company also emphasized that the contractor must be responsible for all the impacts caused.

"We have asked PT Moya to take full responsibility for resolving it properly in accordance with humanity and the law," said Prasetyo.

In addition to asking for accountability, PAM Jaya emphasized that it would not just wait for the results of the investigation. The regional company will take administrative steps in accordance with the applicable cooperation provisions.

"PAM Jaya will give a warning letter (SP) to PT Moya Indonesia, in the hope that similar incidents will not happen again," he said.

Meanwhile, PT Moya Indonesia stated that it would implement safety and health at work (K3) in the clean water distribution network construction project.

According to Moya, the project being worked on is part of the construction of a clean water distribution infrastructure to support the improvement of drinking water services for the people of Jakarta.

"Occupational safety is the top priority in every project implementation. Moya will continue to strengthen the implementation of occupational safety standards and ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with applicable procedures," wrote PT Moya Indonesia's statement.

The incident once again drew attention to the implementation of work safety procedures on underground infrastructure projects, especially work in confined spaces that have a high risk due to the potential for oxygen deficiency and exposure to dangerous gases.

The results of the investigation from the parties concerned are expected to reveal the exact cause of the accident as well as serve as a basis for evaluation so that similar incidents do not recur.
