PEKANBARU - The Pelangi Bus accident on the Pekanbaru-Dumai Toll Road Kilometer 2, Pekanbaru City, Riau, on Tuesday morning resulted in two passengers dying and 16 others being injured.

Head of the Highway Patrol Unit of the Riau Regional Police Traffic Directorate, AKBP Eko Baskara, said the bus, which was traveling from Batin Solapan to Pekanbaru, allegedly hit the back of the tronton truck because the driver fell asleep for a moment (microsleep).

"After the professional completion of the evacuation of the damaged vehicles, traffic flow on the Pekanbaru-Dumai Toll Road has returned to normal, orderly, and conducive," said Eko as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 7.

He said police personnel immediately headed to the location after receiving a report to evacuate the victims trapped inside the bus cabin, securing the crime scene, and arranging traffic flow.

The injured victim was evacuated for medical treatment. Officers also secured the belongings of passengers and dispersed the congestion so that no subsequent accidents occurred.

During the handling process, the police found the driver of the Pelangi Bus fleeing the scene. Currently, the driver is still being searched, while the evidence and the victim's identity have been secured.

Eko said the hard collision caused the truck to bounce out of the road until it entered the ditch. Meanwhile, the front of the bus was heavily damaged.

Two victims who died at the scene were Ibrahim Yafi Al Arumi (2) and Ainul Mardiah (58).

Further handling of the case is now being carried out by the Law Enforcement Unit of the Pekanbaru Police Traffic Unit for the investigation process.
