The case of the death of a student in Lumajang is said by the police to be pure violence, not bullying

LUMAJANG - The Lumajang Police, East Java, confirmed that the death of an SMP student with the initials IL (16) was a case of child abuse, not bullying as previously alleged.

"There is no element of bullying from the results of the investigation, so it is purely the motive of the perpetrator with the initials DF (16) who is annoyed with the victim until it ends in violent acts," said the Head of the Women and Children Protection Unit of the Lumajang Criminal Investigation Unit, Police Inspector Dua Rahmat Budy Prasetyodilansir ANTARA, Friday, July 3.

According to him, the perpetrator was annoyed with the victim because for three days there was an incident that made the perpetrator angry until the peak on Monday (18/5), the perpetrator abused the victim.

"The perpetrator called the victim and conveyed the annoyance, then the perpetrator vented it by beating the victim," he said.

Based on his statement, continued Rahmat, the perpetrator was scolded by the school principal for the victim's actions, so this caused him to be annoyed with the victim.

He explained that the incident that befell the victim IL did not meet the elements of bullying because it did not occur repeatedly and the perpetrator's actions were triggered by anger that led to persecution of the victim.

The Lumajang Police have also named DF as a suspect and have secured the perpetrator at the Lumajang Police for further legal proceedings.

"For his actions, DF was charged with Article 80 paragraph 3 of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection, with a threat of 15 years in prison," he said.

Rahmat explained that the punishment for children who face the law is subject to Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection, which specifically refers to Law Number 11 of 2012 concerning the Juvenile Criminal Justice System.

"Based on the regulation, the maximum prison sentence for children is only half of the maximum criminal threat for adults in the same crime," he said.

Previously, IL was allegedly a victim of bullying and persecution by DF on May 18, 2026, then the victim was sick and received treatment at the hospital until on June 24, 2026 he breathed his last.

Before dying, the victim's family reported the case to the Lumajang Police on June 24, 2026 and was followed up by the PPA Satreskrim until the perpetrator DF was secured to account for his actions.
