JAKARTA - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to guarantee long-term energy supply sales from Russia to Malaysia.

Anwar made the statement on various occasions, after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Russia-ASEAN Summit in Kazan, Russia some time ago.

Anwar during his visit to Penang, Melaka and Johor some time ago, stated that he had asked Putin to provide guarantees for the supply of oil, gas and diesel so that the people of Malaysia would not be burdened by these needs in the future.

"What did President Putin say? He promised to make a deal for long-term supply guarantees for the people of Malaysia," Anwar said, as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, June 26.

Anwar said Putin guaranteed the sale of Russian oil, gas and diesel to Malaysia for the long term.

With Putin's commitment, Anwar Ibrahim estimates that Malaysia's energy supply can be safe for 20 years.

According to Anwar, this can be achieved because Malaysia always takes a central and neutral position and is friendly with other countries.

Malaysia, he said, does not bow to political pressures from any country, which could hinder Malaysia's friendship with a particular country.
