LONDON - Britain has recorded its highest air temperature in 50 years after temperatures in southern England rose to 36.1 degrees Celsius, beating the highest temperature recorded in June 1976.

"Britain has meanwhile recorded the highest ever daily air temperature record in June, with a temperature of 36.1 degrees Celsius recorded in Gosport, Hampshire, today," the Met Office said, quoted by Antara, Thursday, June 25.

The previous temperature record was 35.6 degrees Celsius, which was recorded in Southampton in June 1976 and in Camden Square, London, in June 1957.

Due to the high temperature, a London Climate Action Week activity that focuses on campaigning for community adaptation to extreme heat was canceled.

The event committee said the venue, like many other buildings in London, had no cooling system.

They said they did not want to expose speakers and attendees to temperatures in a very uncomfortable room, especially after crowding on public transport, so as to pose a health risk.

As for Monday, the Met Office issued a weather warning for England and Wales, with air temperatures expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius by Thursday. However, the temperature forecast was later updated to be lower.
