JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump on Monday said he would do what he had to do if Iran did not comply with its agreement with Washington.

"If Iran does not fulfill their agreement, or if they do not behave well, I will do what I have to do," President Trump told reporters, launching Al Arabiya and Reuters (23/6).

President Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a US-Iran interim deal last week, more than three months after the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, causing an escalation in the Middle East.

Following the ceasefire agreement mediated by Pakistan on April 8, the US-Iran then signed an Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding last Wednesday, which was carried out by President Trump and President Masoud Pezeshkian online.

Tehran and Washington held peace talks with the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar at the Lake Lucerne Summit at the Burgenstock Resort, Switzerland, Sunday (21/6).

The meeting was held following the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which consists of 14 points and was signed by President Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian last week.

The US delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance. From the Iranian side there was the Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Galibaf. Meanwhile, Pakistan is led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Qatar is led by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

In addition to the Strait of Hormuz issue and the Lebanese conflict, the lifting of sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets are said to be among those discussed.

President Trump said on Monday that Iran should use the money it has been released to buy food exclusively from the United States.

Meanwhile, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted the governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Abdolnaser Hemmati, as saying that Theran was not obliged to buy agricultural inputs from the US under the current memorandum of understanding.

"All that money will come back in the form of the purchase of food that they really need. They have 91 million people, they can't feed them. So, the money we liquidate will be given to our farmers," said President Trump.

Hemmati said the remaining frozen funds did not have to be used only for essential goods and could be sent to buy other goods that were not subject to sanctions, Tasnim reported.
