JAKARTA - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot discussed the issue of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz in a telephone conversation.

The talks come after reports that France is seeking to launch a joint mission with Britain to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Previously, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that Tehran did not need assistance from countries outside the region to normalize navigation on the strategic route.

"The parties stressed the importance of safe and lawful navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and expressed the need to ensure the security and stability of this important strategic route for international peace and trade," the statement read, as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Friday, June 19.

In the early hours of Thursday, Iran and the United States signed a remote memorandum of understanding that regulates the cessation of the military conflict that began on February 28.

The memorandum of understanding also sets a schedule for lifting the United States naval blockade and restoring Iranian shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, Iran is committed not to make nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, the issue of Iran's nuclear program will be discussed in a separate agreement.

The two countries are expected to hold negotiations on the issue in the next 60 days. For Tehran, the expected outcome of the process is the lifting of sanctions that have been imposed on Iran.
