JAKARTA - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi urged Israel to abandon its plan to seize 70 percent of the Palestinian-owned Gaza Strip.
Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his military to seize more territory in the war-torn Gaza Strip, ignoring a 2025 October ceasefire deal.
El-Sisi said that the Israeli military initially controlled about 50 percent, then continued to annex it until it controlled about 60 percent of the Gaza Strip and continued to move to achieve the annexation of the region up to 70 percent.
Under the ceasefire agreement, El-Sisi insisted that Israeli forces should withdraw to the so-called "yellow line," which separates the territory controlled by the Palestinian independence group Hamas and that controlled by the Israeli army.
"Only 30 percent of the Gaza Strip is effectively left for the Palestinian people," El-Sisi said, during a G7 summit session on Middle East stability in the Evian resort, France, Tuesday local time, quoted by AFP.
In an event also attended by G7 and European Union leaders as well as leaders of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, El-Sisi stressed that Israel's efforts to control the Palestinian Gaza Strip "must be stopped immediately".
El-Sisi said that "there is no other alternative than reaching a just and lasting settlement for the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution" and urged "the implementation of US President Donald Trump's plan for peace in the Gaza Strip."
Egypt, which borders Gaza, has been the main mediator of the conflict between Israel and Hamas since Israel carried out a full-fledged ground invasion of Gaza in October 2023.
During the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreed to by Hamas and Israel, the remaining hostages captured in the October attack were released, in exchange for the release of Palestinians held by Israel.
The transition to the second phase, which was supposed to involve the disarmament of Hamas and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, stalled for months.
Currently, Gaza is still experiencing violence every day, with the Israeli military continuing to carry out attacks causing an increase in the number of Palestinian civilian casualties.
