JAKARTA - The Central Sulawesi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded 841 houses of residents were damaged by a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 that shook a number of areas in Central Sulawesi on Tuesday (16/6).

Head of Emergency and Logistics BPBD Central Sulawesi Andi Sembiring said Sigi Regency was the area with the most significant damage impact.

"A total of 800 houses were damaged in Sigi Regency, consisting of 720 houses damaged slightly, 68 houses damaged moderately, and 12 houses damaged severely," he said as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, June 17.

In addition to residents' houses, damage also occurred to two office units, 15 places of worship, one micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME), and one bridge connecting Kamora B Village and Tongoa Village.

He explained that the results of the temporary data collection showed that the impact of the damage was spread across Sigi Regency, Parigi Moutong, Palu City and Poso Regency.

In Parigi Moutong Regency, a total of 37 houses were affected. Meanwhile, in Palu City, the damage included one house, one business building, the Tadulako University Auditorium Building, the Tadulako University Multipurpose Building, and various parts of the building at the Best Western Hotel and Santika Hotel.

Meanwhile, in Poso Regency, three houses in Tumora Village were damaged and road access in the Napu area was reported to have collapsed due to the earthquake.

In addition to causing building damage, BPBD recorded one death, 13 people were seriously injured and 63 others were lightly injured.

The victim who died was from Ampera Village, Palolo District, Sigi Regency. In addition, two residents suffered minor injuries in Palu City.

In Sigi Regency, the injured victims consisted of 21 people in Bora Village, Sigi City District, 22 people in Uwenuni Village, Palolo District, 16 people in Kamarora A Village and three people in Kamarora B Village, Nokilalaki District, and one person in Sibalaya Barat Village, Tanambulava District.

Meanwhile, the victims of serious injuries were one person in Bora Village, two people in Uwenuni Village, one person in Bakubakulu Village, and nine people in Kamarora B Village. In Poso Regency, one resident of Tumora Village suffered minor injuries due to being hit by the roof of a house.

Andi said that the Central Sulawesi BPBD together with the affected district/city BPBD continued to conduct data collection and emergency handling for residents affected by the earthquake.

"Currently, the focus of handling is directed at meeting the basic needs of affected people. Disaster logistics has begun to be distributed and coordination with all related parties continues," he said.

To accelerate emergency handling, BPBD Central Sulawesi together with affected district/city BPBD, TNI, Polri, and related institutions continue to conduct field assessments and data collection on the impact of disasters.

The government has also distributed disaster logistics and emergency tents to the affected areas. Kodam XXIII/Palaka Wira has distributed four units of tents and 50 velbeds to Samaritan Palu Hospital as well as five units of tents, 150 velbeds, and one field kitchen to the Nokilalaki Sub-District Post.

Meanwhile, the BMKG Palu Geophysical Station recorded that as of Wednesday (17/6) at 08.30 WITA, there had been 466 aftershocks after the main M6.7 earthquake centered in the Sausu area, Parigi Moutong Regency.

Of these, as many as 25 aftershocks were reported to have been felt by the public. BMKG recorded the largest magnitude of aftershocks reaching M5.2 and the smallest M1.3.

Although the aftershock activity is still ongoing, the frequency has begun to show a decreasing trend compared to the early hours after the main earthquake occurred.
